Nadja: In the Forest Near Hillerød Station, You’ll Find a Hidden Gem

Hidden among forests, canals, and historic landscapes, North Zealand is full of stories waiting to be discovered. Nadja Solem Solgaard from the Industrial Museum Frederiks Værk shares her favourite places, where nature, history, and local experiences come beautifully together every season.

1. The Gunpowder Works Area in Frederiksværk

For 200 years, gunpowder was produced right in the middle of Frederiksværk. Start with a visit to the KRUDT museum to learn more about the production of explosive black powder, then take a walk through the old gunpowder works area, which today has become a green oasis in the charming town of Frederiksværk.

2. Knud Rasmussen’s House and the Walk to Kikhavn

North of Hundested, you’ll find Knud Rasmussen’s House, where the polar explorer came to find peace for writing and planning expeditions. The house has a very special atmosphere, and the surrounding nature is absolutely stunning. From here, you can walk all the way along the coast to the old fishing village of Kikhavn.

3. A Run Along the “Royal Power and the Strength of Water” Hiking Route

Go for an energising run along the canal towards Lake Arresø by following the hiking route “Royal Power and the Strength of Water.”

Take a break at the historical information signs along the way to catch your breath and learn a little local history. And if you want to make the trip even more fun, bring along the map “The Great Medal Hunt” and search for hidden medals on the route.

4. Æbelholt Abbey

Just outside Hillerød, you’ll find the Æbelholt Abbey museum. Here, you can see the many skeletons discovered on the site, explore the monastery ruins through VR, or enjoy the medicinal herbs growing in the abbey garden.

5. Fantasy Island in Hillerød

I love the Baroque Garden at Frederiksborg Castle, but hidden in the forest near Hillerød Station, you’ll find a true hidden gem – Fantasy Island. On the small island in the lake are the ruins of King Frederik VII and Countess Danner’s private retreat, where they could enjoy nature and each other’s company in peace.

6. A Fish Cake at the Harbour in Gilleleje

Gilleleje is a charming old fishing town with half-timbered houses and hollyhocks lining the narrow streets, while the harbour itself is a modern industrial harbour. Explore both the town and the harbour with a fish cake topped with remoulade in your hand.

7. The Fireplace Lounge at Spisehus KNUD

Stop by Spisehus KNUD at the harbour in Hundested, where you’ll always eat well. Be sure to try the house-made cola. On a grey and rainy day, settle into the fireplace lounge and enjoy the view across the sea and harbour while the fire crackles nearby..
