Along the North Coast, you’ll find wide, white sandy beaches with excellent swimming opportunities, for example at Hundested, Dronningmølle, and Tisvildeleje. In other places, steep cliffs offer breathtaking views over the Kattegat, such as at Gilbjerg Head and the heather-covered hills of Heatherhill.

Gribskov is Denmark’s second-largest forest and a unique natural area with forest lakes, wetlands, meadows, and rolling pastures, and is now part of the National Park Roya´l North Zealand. The forest is a treasure trove of nature experiences. How about spending a night outdoors—in a shelter or at a campsite? Find plenty of inspiration for outdoor experiences here on this page.

North Zealand´s Nature

Photo: Daniel Villadsen

On Melby Overdrev, between Liseleje Plantation and Asserbo Plantation, Heather extends to the dunes. The many flowers in the open areas attract beautiful butterflies and other rare insects. Grasshoppers play music while bumblebees buzz heavily from flower to flower. This can also be experienced at Gilbjerg Hoved and Rusland near Rudolph Tegner's Museum.

Tisvilde Hegn has a unique story, as the forest was planted on sand. Lots of sand. Sand that had blown in from the beach for centuries covered several villages. Not all trees thrive on the sand. The Scots pine can handle it. But the wind from the sea and the larvae of the pine moth have transformed parts of the forest into a magical troll place with twisted trunks in many forms. Some believe the Sea Bull stirred up the sand many years ago. Now, it has reappeared on a sea-inspired forest playground at Liseleje Beach.

At Hundested, the rugged Kattegat meets the gentler Isefjord and Roskilde Fjord. Experience it all from the saddle along the North Coast Path, Route 47. Denmark’s two largest lakes, Arresø and Esrum Lake, are located in North Zealand. Here you can canoe or kayak, go fishing, and enjoy the rich birdlife. Make use of the well-equipped barbecue spots along Esrum Lake, and in summer, set sail on Arresø with the charming boat service M/S Frederikke.

There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities in the Danish Nature Agency’s forests and lakes—cycling, camping, horse riding, and kayaking. The barbecue areas are set in beautiful locations, especially along the lakeshores. You’ll also find a wide range of hiking and running routes, fitness trails, mountain bike tracks, and nature playgrounds—not to mention the wildlife and cultural history.

Discover ruins of medieval monasteries and castles, as well as burial mounds and passage graves dating back 5,000 years. With your mobile phone in hand, you can often access the stories behind these ancient sites by calling the number displayed on signposts. Nature is also accessible for people with limited mobility, as several areas offer short, well-surfaced routes.
