A Story of Escape, Hope, and Courage
In collaboration with the Danish Jewish Museum, Museum Nordsjælland invites visitors on a walking tour through the locations that played a central role during the dramatic events of October 1943. Along the way, curator Søren Frandsen recounts the developments day by day, highlighting both the historical events and the people who experienced them.
The tour follows the key locations in Gilleleje where refugees, residents, and fishermen became part of one of the most significant stories of the German occupation of Denmark.
From the Railway Station to the Harbour

Arrival in Gilleleje
The tour begins at Gilleleje Station, where many refugees arrived, hoping to find a way across the Øresund to Sweden. Visitors will learn about the uncertainty many faced and the difficult decisions that had to be made within a short period of time.

Securing a Passage to Sweden
The walk continues to the drying grounds near Havnevej. Here, the focus is on the many people who sought passage across the sea and on the challenges and risks that characterised the escape attempts.
Gilleleje Church Loft and the Decisive Hours
One of the most significant stops on the tour is the loft of Gilleleje Church. Here, visitors hear the story of the refugees who hid in the loft while waiting for an opportunity to continue their journey.
The account provides insight into the dramatic events that unfolded and the personal destinies shaped by the war.
The Fishermen and the Crossings to Sweden

Local People Made a Difference
The tour concludes in the garden of Gilleleje Museum. Here, attention is given to the local fishermen and families who took part in transporting refugees across the Øresund. You gain insight into the period following October 1943 and the continued efforts made by local residents during the remainder of the occupation.

- The walking tour takes place on 7 October from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm.
Tickets and Participation
- Price: DKK 95 plus booking fee.
- Tickets can be purchased through Nationalparkbooking. The number of places is limited.
- The event will take place, subject to a sufficient number of participants.
Meeting Point and Parking
- The tour begins at Gilleleje Station, in front of the station building.
- Parking is available near the station.
- The walk is conducted at a moderate pace and includes access to the church loft via stairs. Comfortable and practical footwear is recommended.
- Dogs are welcome during the outdoor parts of the tour, but are not permitted in the church loft or inside Gilleleje Museum.
