Janus la Cour and the Quiet Poetry of Nature
In a unique collaboration with Museum Kunst der Westküste, the Nivaagaard Collection reinterprets the Danish landscape painter Janus la Cour (1837-1909). The exhibition delves into la Cour’s serene and timeless depictions of nature, consistently avoiding human presence and signs of modernity. His works capture the essence of nature with near-scientific precision, creating a series of motifs with variations in light, composition, and detail.
La Cour had a profound fascination
...with the earth’s surface, often zooming in on elements such as stones and rock formations. His works are presented alongside paintings by Per Kirkeby (1938-2018), who admired la Cour and owned several of his works. This dialogue between two artists across generations offers a compelling exploration of nature’s visual language.
Curated in collaboration with renowned German author and art historian Florian Illies, as well as Museum Kunst der Westküste, the exhibition also sheds light on la Cour’s connection to his mentor, P.C. Skovgaard, whose works are part of Nivaagaard’s collection.
Experience an exhibition that unites the tranquillity and intensity of nature through the artistic perspectives of two generations.
