What is it really like to live in a house designed by Jørn Utzon? On Architecture Day, Fredensborghusene opens its doors for a special experience – and you’re invited!
Architecture at Eye Level – and Eye Contact
Designed by Jørn Utzon in the early 1960s, Fredensborghusene is a piece of living architectural history. Here, you don’t just encounter walls, rooflines and paths – you meet people who live in the architecture and give it meaning.
On the day, the residents themselves will welcome you and guide you through their homes in the scenic surroundings. Guided tours are offered every hour.
The Iconic Housing Complex
The 77 houses – including the characteristic L-shaped courtyard homes – form a discreet mosaic in the landscape, connected by green wedges and small paths. The entire area was laid out by Utzon using a so-called “finger plan,” ensuring that every house has a view of the natural surroundings.
The design respects privacy while embracing community – a balance you can feel in every detail. In the centre building, residents can enjoy shared facilities including a restaurant, event spaces and guest rooms, as well as the Utzon Museum Fredensborg.

Drop by the museum in the centre building and engage with residents or fellow architecture enthusiasts. The atmosphere is relaxed and open – curiosity and conversation are the focus.
Build It Yourself – Architecture Workshop Inspired by Nature
Curious about how architecture comes to life? Join the hands-on workshop with architects Charlotte Carstensen and Julie Dufour from All About A. Both school groups and adults are invited to design a meeting place for connection across generations – using nature as inspiration.
Workshop introductions at 10:00, 11:30 and 13:00 in the centre building’s shared spaces. Free participation. No sign-up required – but school groups must register in advance at: saaby70@gmail.com
