From Coastal Defence to Nature Experience

The entrenchment at Spodsbjerg was built in the early 19th century following the loss of the Danish fleet in 1807. Together with a number of other coastal fortifications, it was designed to protect the entrance to Isefjord and keep enemy ships at bay during the Napoleonic Wars. The site accommodated cannons, mortars, and local militia forces prepared to defend the coastline.

Today, the old earthworks are the most visible remains of the fortification, but the site is just as well known for its spectacular location. From the top of the cliff, visitors can enjoy sweeping views across the Kattegat Sea, and on clear days it is possible to see the island of Hesselø more than 30 kilometres offshore.

The entrenchment is located close to Knud Rasmussen’s House and the scenic coastal route towards Kikhavn, making it an ideal destination for a walk where cultural heritage, coastal landscapes, and panoramic sea views come together.
