New royal portrait of H.M. The King joins the Great Hall at Frederiksborg

A new portrait in the Great Hall

For centuries, Frederiksborg has provided a setting for portraits of Danish kings and queens. The Great Hall is home to a number of well-known royal portraits by artists including Laurits Tuxen, Otto Bache and Preben Hornung.

A new work now joins the collection: the first official painted portrait of H.M. King Frederik X. The portrait was created by Danish artist Cathrine Raben Davidsen, the first female artist to paint an official portrait of a reigning monarch for the Great Hall.

From initial studies to the finished portrait

A special exhibition offers an insight into the work behind the new royal portrait. Through photographs, drawings and painted sketches, visitors can follow the process from the initial studies to the finished work.

The exhibition shows how the portrait gradually took shape and how Cathrine Raben Davidsen worked with colour, atmosphere and detail in her artistic interpretation of the King.

The making of the portrait on film

The creative process is also explored in an exhibition film by Anja Hauberg Kaalund. The film follows the making of the portrait and offers another perspective on the work leading to the finished piece.

About Cathrine Raben Davidsen

Cathrine Raben Davidsen (b. 1972) is a Danish artist who graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. She has also studied at art academies in Italy and the Netherlands.
