Lucian Freud: One of the greatest portrait artists of the 20th century

People on paper. People on canvas. People portrayed through paint, pencil, etching and charcoal. Lucian Freud is considered one of the leading figures of 20th-century figurative art.

And for good reason: the people in his works are captivating and deeply expressive. Whatever medium he worked with, Freud captured the vitality of the human figure on canvas, creating images that feel raw and powerful to encounter.

Previously unseen works at Louisiana Museum

In the exhibition at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, you will encounter Lucian Freud’s major and well-known works. But the exhibition also presents parts of his artistic practice that have rarely been shown before.

You will also experience the breadth of his work, as Louisiana displays both paintings and works on paper.

Figurative art and emigration

Lucian Freud lived from 1922 to 2011 and was a British painter specialising in figurative art.

He emigrated from Nazi Germany to England with his family in the 1930s to escape persecution. He was also the grandson of Sigmund Freud.
