Experiences at child height all year round

At Esrum Abbey, history is something to engage with. Activities for children change with the seasons, offering new experiences throughout the year. They take place both at the abbey and in the surrounding landscape.

Borrow a children’s kit and explore

In the exhibition An Eye for Landscape, you can borrow a children’s kit and take it outdoors for a calm and engaging experience. The kit includes small activities that invite drawing, exploring, and collecting from nature. Questions and prompts encourage reflection and conversation, while a map points out ideal spots in the landscape.

The content of the kit changes throughout the year, reflecting seasonal shifts and ensuring something new to discover.

Activities in the exhibition An Eye for Landscape

Inside the exhibition, activities connect to the children’s kit and mirror what happens outdoors, creating a link between landscape and storytelling. In the abbey cellar, the story of Brother Stefan unfolds. Through a sensory narrative, children are introduced to monastic life using sounds, scents, and tactile elements. Afterwards, the experience continues in the Abbot’s Hall, where the atmosphere is deepened through the sound of monks’ singing.

Treasure hunt in the abbey's surroundings

The story continues outside with a treasure hunt that follows in Brother Stefan’s footsteps through the monastery garden and surrounding areas. Along the way, families solve tasks and collect clues as the story unfolds in the landscape.

Nature playground with a medieval atmosphere

The nature playground offers space for imaginative and active play in surroundings inspired by a small medieval village. Children can explore features such as a fortress, a moat, and a zip line, with areas for relaxation in nature.

Step into history with VR

VR headsets offer a digital journey into the past, allowing families to experience the monastery from a new perspective. The experience provides a sense of how the monastery once looked and brings history to life visually.
