A sensory experience by the fire
Charcoal burning takes place around the fire, where participants actively take part in the process. The wood is placed in a charcoal container and carefully followed as it slowly turns into charcoal.
Along the way, there is time to carve a small pencil, enjoy a warm cup of tea, and listen to stories about life in the forests. When the process is complete, participants can take their own drawing charcoal home.

Tales of the “black men.”
The stories focus on the charcoal burners – known as the “black men” – who worked in the forests of North Zealand. They guarded the smoking kilns day and night while wood was transformed into charcoal without oxygen.
It was demanding work and an essential part of local life, passed down through generations.
A historic craft in North Zealand
Charcoal burning has deep roots around Esrum Abbey. Charcoal was crucial for achieving the high temperatures needed for iron extraction and metalwork.
As early as the 16th century, the abbey played a significant role in supplying charcoal to meet the king’s needs. Local farmers and labourers carried out the work, and the tradition continued in the forests for centuries.
Combine the experience with the abbey
A visit can easily be extended with other experiences on site. The exhibitions offer insight into the history of the abbey, while guided tours bring the stories to life.
Visitors can also enjoy a break in the café, explore the shop, or let children play at the natural playground. The area invites exploration at a relaxed pace.
An activity at your own pace
Charcoal burning sessions begin several times throughout the day, making it easy to fit the visit into your own schedule. The activity unfolds in calm surroundings, allowing time for both immersion and shared moments.
