Northern Light along the North Coast
The Northern Lights are a natural light phenomenon that occurs when particles from the sun collide with the Earth's atmosphere. Although the Northern Lights are usually seen in the Arctic regions, they can also be experienced in North Zealand. It is rare, but occasionally they can be seen from the coast of North Zealand.
To increase your chances of witnessing the Northern Lights, it is recommended to go to dark locations along the northern coast. You can also improve your chances by joining the Facebook group "Nordlysvarsel i Danmark" (Northern Lights Alert in Denmark) or by downloading a Northern Lights app to your smartphone.

Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød is a fairytale experience that no child or adult should miss. The beautiful Renaissance castle is built on three small islands in the castle lake, where its many towers and spires are reflected in the lake's mirror-like surface, creating an enchanting sight.
Fredensborg Palace holds a special status as the Queen's most frequently used residence. This beautiful 18th-century Baroque palace was originally built as a hunting lodge for Frederick IV and today often serves as the setting for major official state visits and family events in the royal family.
Esrum Abbey was the centre of the Cistercians in Denmark in the 1100s. Today, it hosts events year-round for both children and adults, offering a glimpse into life in the Middle Ages. The historic buildings exude tranquillity and grandeur.
The art in the nature
The nature of North Zealand offers beautiful gardens, parks, and idyllic hiking trails. The cycling paths wind through the landscape, and if you’re looking for a cultural experience, you can also find it right in the midst of nature. Explore art in the open air as you walk through the area known as Rusland near the Rudolph Tegner Museum, in the park at Louisiana, or in the castle garden at Fredensborg Palace. Rusland is the name given to the area around Rudolph Tegner’s Museum and Statue Park. Wander through the heather-covered hills of Rusland, surrounded by statues of powerful men and women. In the midst of the heather hills lies Tegner’s Museum and Statue Park, featuring 14 of the artist's small and large bronze sculptures.
The sculpture park is an integral part of the experience in Louisiana year-round. The museum's location in the park facing the Øresund, along with the design of the buildings and terrain, creates a unique setting for displaying the approximately 60 works that form an essential part of the Collection.
Sculptures in royal gardens often depict the exalted gods and goddesses of antiquity. However, in the Fredensborg Palace Garden, you can find a truly unique attraction: 70 sandstone sculptures of ordinary fishermen and farmers, representing how they looked in 18th-century Norway and the Faroe Islands. This sculpture group is called Nordmandsdalen, and it was initiated by Frederick V in 1764.
Adventures on Foot
Lace up your hiking boots and head out into nature. Explore the beauty of North Zealand on the Halsninoen trail that winds through Halsnæs, along the coast with its magnificent views of the Kattegat, or follow in the footsteps of pilgrims along the Tisvildevejen route.
Halsninoen is a 52 km marked hiking trail that runs through the entire Halsnæs region, from Hundested in the west to Strø Bjerge in the south. Halsnæs offers a diverse range of nature, including rolling landscapes, coastal meadows, heathlands, winding country roads, vast deep forests, the Roskilde and Ise fjords, and Denmark's largest lake, Arresø
Along the coast from the town of Gilleleje, you’ll find the hiking trail, Gilbjergstien. Enjoy the view from the cliffs, which rise up to 33 meters above the Kattegat. Along the way, you’ll pass the Gilbjerg Stone and the memorial stone for the renowned Danish writer and philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard.
Get fresh air, space for thoughts, and room for your senses. Take a hike in North Zealand on the charming old pilgrimage route: Tisvildevejen. The route has been used by pilgrims since the Middle Ages, and even Denmark's own Søren Kierkegaard visited the area for a mental retreat.
By bike or on foot along the castle lake, the Søstien trail offers a scenic cycling or hiking experience with views of Frederiksborg Castle. You are close to both the heart of Hillerød, the Renaissance castle, and beautiful nature.
