Gilleleje Wine – Quality wines in the heart of Gilleleje
Gilleleje Wine is both a vineyard and a winery near Gilleleje. The wines are grown, harvested, produced and bottled locally, with a focus on craftsmanship, the cool climate and the area’s distinctive terroir.
Gilleleje Wine – Cool Climate Wines in the Heart of Gilleleje
Nestled in the scenic landscape of Hågendrup, just three kilometres from Gilleleje Harbour and close to the Kattegat coast, Gilleleje Wine is a family-run vineyard where Danish country wine is taken to the next level.
Around 7,000 vines are planted on the south-facing vineyard, established between 2018 and 2020. The winery was founded in 2018 by Merete and Søren Engelsen, who personally welcome guests, guide tours through the vineyard and share their passion for cool climate wine production.
A New Generation of Danish Wine
The two-hectare vineyard is planted with the white grape varieties Solaris and Muscaris, as well as Pinot Noir Précoce – an early ripening Pinot Noir used for red wine production. The land is cultivated according to organic principles, with great respect for nature, the local microclimate, and the unique terroir near the Kattegat.
The former horse stable at Østergaard has been carefully transformed into a modern winery equipped with everything needed to produce high-quality wines. The ambition is to create Danish wine of international standard – shaped by the soil and climate of Gilleleje and perfectly suited to the culinary treasures of the coast and sea.
According to historical sources, the estate was once part of the lands of Queen Margrethe I, which is why the wines are sometimes referred to as part of “The Kings’ North Zealand – The Queen’s Wine.”
