Easter at Esrum Abbey | A Sensory Walk Among the Trees
Under the Trees is a sensory Easter experience for both children and adults. Join a spring walk through the abbey landscape and discover the trees through storytelling, reflection, and creative activities – outdoors and indoors.
Spring walks in the abbey landscape
Under the Trees invites you to explore the landscape surrounding Esrum Abbey & Mill Farm. The routes lead through woodland and open areas, where nature sets the scene for shared experiences.
There are two walks to choose from:
Spring walk for young children
A shorter walk designed for children aged 4–7 and their families. The route is under 1 kilometre and lasts approximately 30–40 minutes. The pace and activities are adapted to younger participants.
Spring walk for older children and adults
A longer walk of around 1.5 kilometres, lasting approximately 1–1.5 hours. This route allows more time for immersion and reflection in the landscape.
Sensory stops along the way
Both walks include pauses at selected trees, where different species open up opportunities for small experiments and sensory exploration. You can:
Create bark rubbings from the ridged trunk of maple trees
Paint with ink derived from oak branches
Experiment with flower prints from early spring plants
During the walk, the host reads selected texts by cultural geographer Emmy Laura Perez Fjalland, written especially for these spring walks. Her words offer new perspectives on the character of trees and on the human connection to nature.
Eye for Landscape – creative Easter activities indoors
The walk can be combined with a visit to the exhibition Eye for Landscape inside Esrum Abbey. The exhibition explores the landscape surrounding the abbey and invites both children and adults to engage creatively.
Visitors can fold paper birds inspired by the species living in the abbey’s trees and let them settle in the exhibition’s shared tree. Templates in varying levels of difficulty make it accessible for all ages.
There is also space to work with sound and drawing: What does spring sound like? How might birdsong be translated into lines and colours? The activities are open and flexible and can be enjoyed before or after the walk.
