The Human in the Monastery – A Sensory Journey at Esrum Monastery
Step Behind the Walls and Discover Monastic Life. What was it like to live behind the thick monastery walls? Why did so many people in the Middle Ages choose a life of devotion? These questions are explored in the permanent exhibition The Human in the Monastery at Esrum Monastery, where visitors engage their senses through sound, light, and physical installations.
Experience Monastic Life
The exhibition transports visitors back in time to when monks lived by strict rules and daily prayers. Personal stories from a monk, an abbot, and a lay brother provide an intimate insight into life within the monastery walls.
The exhibition has been created in collaboration with YOKE and Dark Matters and is supported by the Knud Højgaard Foundation.
Explore the Monastery’s Surroundings
As an extension of the exhibition, The Monastery in the Landscape offers outdoor experiences that provide glimpses of the monastery’s former grandeur.
Step into history and experience Esrum Monastery from both inside and out.
