Frederiksborg expands its scientific portrait collection with a new work. Discover Nobel laureate Morten Meldal in a freshly painted portrait by John Kørner – where art and science meet.

The Meeting of Art and Science

A Groundbreaking Scientist

The newest addition to the National History Museum’s portrait collection features Professor Morten Meldal, who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2022 for his discovery of “click chemistry” – a method essential to the development of modern medicine. Meldal is a professor at the University of Copenhagen and a leading figure in Danish research.

John Kørner’s Artistic Perspective

The portrait is painted by renowned visual artist John Kørner, known for his colourful and inquisitive style. The work offers a fresh interpretation of the scientist – not just as a professional, but as a curious and reflective human being.

From Brushstroke to Discovery

Alongside the completed portrait, visitors can explore related works by Kørner that reveal the creative process and underlying ideas. The presentation draws parallels between the investigative nature of both science and art – showing how curiosity drives both fields toward new insight.

Part of a Scientific Legacy

Frederiksborg’s portrait collection of scientists dates back to the 16th century and includes historical figures such as Tycho Brahe and Niels Bohr. With the addition of Morten Meldal’s portrait, the tradition continues into the present, highlighting modern scientific achievement.

New Audio Guide on Science Portraits

A new audio guide has been launched in connection with the unveiling. It leads visitors through the museum’s portraits of scientists – from early astronomers to contemporary researchers like Morten Meldal and astronaut Andreas Mogensen.
