Søborg Lake – Where nature returns on a grand scale

Søborg Lake is a remarkable nature restoration project – a new, large lake in the North Zealand landscape. Here, nature, history and outdoor life meet – best explored by foot or by bike.

A landscape in transformation

After over two centuries as farmland, Søborg Lake is slowly returning to its original state. Once completed, it will be Zealand’s fourth-largest lake, surrounded by newly established trails and peaceful natural spots.

Explore by bike or on foot

A 13 km tour on two wheels

The 13 km trail takes you around the lake on a mix of gravel paths, some paved stretches, and a special boardwalk for pedestrians. The route offers varied scenery with wide open views, wooded areas, and quiet rest spots – perfect for cyclists and families alike.

Walking routes with views and stories

Walking routes can be split into north and south sections. The northern route is accessible from Søborg Forsamlingshus, the Pump Station, or Pårup train stop. The southern part can begin from either of the two stations in Græsted. Along the way, enjoy peaceful surroundings and broad views of the restored landscape.

Nature and culture side by side

A haven for birdwatchers

Søborg Lake attracts a wide range of bird species. Spot the sea eagle in flight, hear the booming call of the bittern, and see the migratory birds resting on their journey.

Step into history at Søborg Castle

On the western side of the lake lie the ruins of Søborg Castle – once among Denmark’s strongest medieval fortresses. From here, you get sweeping views across a landscape where past and present blend in harmony.

Connected to North Zealand’s natural network

Søborg Lake is part of a larger web of routes across North Zealand. Follow cycle route 33 from Gilleleje Station or route 703 for a longer tour. The area is easily combined with other natural gems like Gribskov and Esrum Lake.
